During the summer months, a wide array of watersports and parasailing opportunities await you. And, of course, there’s always the favored beach activity of simply relaxing and soaking up the warm Gulf of Mexico sunshine.

Fishing charters ply the waters of the Gulf, providing the chance for you to land a big one, or just enjoy a day on the water.

For the naturalist, there are an equally dazzling variety of interesting activities to enjoy.

Beginning in May, you can watch for sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs, with an average of 100 eggs laid per nest.  Then, 55 to 70 days later, the hatchlings make their dash for the beach.  Each year dozens of loggerhead nests and even some Kemps Ridley nests are found and protected by the volunteer organization “Share the Beach.”  Just click on the link for more information about their Adopt-A-Nest program and ways you can help these fragile species endure.

Also just minutes from Hotel Magnolia: the 7,000 acres of the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, with habitat for migratory birds and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. Established by an act of Congress in 1980, to preserve the coastal dune ecosystem and protech threatened and endangered species, the Refuge also serves as a living laboratory.

A series of year-round events at the Refuge offer you engaging ways to interact with nature and learn more about the coastal environment. Guided trail walks offer the chance to learn more from knowledgeable scientists and volunteers.

In August, off-shore power boats in the Off-Shore Super Series race for major purses in “Thunder on the Gulf.”

If you prefer a quieter approach to boating, there are kayak and canoe rentals that allow you to take a slower pace to exploring along the Gulf, in the bay and in the numerous navigable rivers in the area.
